Calgary to Vancouver is roughly 970 km on Highway 1 and Highway 5, a 10 to 12 hour drive in summer and two days in winter. A full-service move for a two-bedroom home typically runs $3,200 CAD to $5,500 CAD. The route crosses three mountain passes, and British Columbia enforces winter tires from 1 October to 30 April.
I made this move in late October with a 26-foot truck, a cat and a plan that fell apart at Rogers Pass. Here is the version I wish somebody had told me first.
How far is Calgary to Vancouver, and how long does the drive really take?
The standard route runs west on the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) through Banff, Golden and Revelstoke to Kamloops, then south on the Coquihalla (Highway 5) to Hope, then west into Metro Vancouver. Total distance is about 970 km.
Google says 10 hours. That assumes a car, dry pavement and no stops. In a loaded truck, on grades that halve your speed, I logged closer to 13 hours. Split it across two days. Kamloops sits at the 605 km mark and makes the obvious overnight.
Highway 3 through the Crowsnest Pass is the southern alternative at about 1,100 km. Locals use it when Rogers Pass closes.
What are the BC winter tire and chain rules?
This is the rule most Albertans learn too late. British Columbia requires winter tires on most provincial highways from 1 October to 30 April, including Highway 1 through the Rockies and the entire Coquihalla. Acceptable tires carry the M+S symbol or the three-peaked mountain snowflake, with at least 3.5 mm of tread. The Province of British Columbia lists the signed routes at gov.bc.ca winter tires and chains.
Commercial vehicles above 11,794 kg must also carry chains. Rental trucks sit below that threshold, but the rental counter will not check your tires. I checked mine in the Calgary yard and found two all-seasons with no snowflake.
Fines start at $121 CAD. The real risk is being turned back at a chain-up bay with a loaded truck.
Mountain passes, elevation and truck restrictions
Three summits matter. Kicking Horse Pass sits at 1,627 m near the Alberta border. Rogers Pass reaches 1,330 m and closes without warning for avalanche control, sometimes for two to six hours. Coquihalla Summit tops out at 1,244 m and carries the worst wind of the three.
A loaded truck loses power at elevation, so plan the climb in low gear and expect brake heat descending into Hope. DriveBC posts live closures every morning, which is why I no longer leave Calgary without checking it.
Vehicles over 4.15 m high face clearance limits on some connectors, and provincial transport ministries issue oversize permits.
What does a Calgary to Vancouver move cost?
These are ranges, not quotes. Your number moves with volume, season and access.

The fees that surprise people are access charges. A long carry to the door, a stair carry above one flight, a shuttle when a 53-foot trailer cannot reach a downtown lane, and elevator booking fees are billed separately. Get those line items in writing.

Booking a crew: what to ask before you sign
Ask four questions. Is the quote binding or an estimate. Is my load going direct or consolidating with other households. What is the delivery window in days, not dates. What valuation coverage applies, replacement value or the default 60 cents per pound.
Carriers vary enormously on those four answers, and the cheapest quote usually hides a two-week delivery window. Companies that run the Alberta to BC corridor weekly, such as these Calgary to Vancouver movers, tend to quote tighter windows because the truck is already scheduled to make the run. Ask how often they drive the corridor, and whether the crew loading in Calgary is the crew unloading in Vancouver.

Why your Calgary furniture will not fit a Vancouver apartment
My Calgary bungalow was 1,150 square feet with a garage and a basement. My first Vancouver apartment was 640 square feet on the fourth floor with one storage locker.
The sectional did not fit the elevator. The chest freezer had nowhere to live. The dining table sold for $80 CAD three days before the truck arrived. Measure the doorway, the elevator car and the corridor turn before you ship anything large. Elevators in older Vancouver buildings are commonly 1.4 m deep, and a three-seat sofa is often 2.1 m long. Every cubic foot costs money twice: once on the truck, once in the storage unit you then rent.
The BC rental market reality
Vancouver rents higher and vacates slower than Calgary. CMHC’s Rental Market Report has recently placed average purpose-built two-bedroom rent in the Vancouver census metropolitan area in the $2,100 CAD to $2,400 CAD range, with vacancy under two per cent. Calgary’s average has sat well below that. Current figures appear in CMHC’s rental market data tables.
Landlords therefore want references, pay stubs and often a credit check before holding a unit. Signing remotely from Calgary is normal. Build a week of overlap between leases, because a same-day handover across 970 km of mountain highway fails often.
Ferry logistics if you are moving to the Island
If the destination is Victoria or Nanaimo, the move does not end in Vancouver. BC Ferries runs Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay in about 1 hour 35 minutes and Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay in about 1 hour 40 minutes. Vehicles over 6.1 m long pay by the foot and need a commercial reservation. Reserve the sailing before the truck.
The week-by-week sequence: what to book first
- Eight weeks out. Get three written quotes. Confirm binding or estimate. Book the ferry if the Island is your destination.
- Six weeks out. Confirm the carrier or reserve the one-way truck. Give notice on your Calgary lease.
- Four weeks out. Measure the Vancouver doorway, elevator and corridor. Sell or donate whatever fails.
- Three weeks out. Book the destination elevator and loading bay. Most towers require notice and a deposit.
- Two weeks out. Update your address with Canada Post, Service Alberta and your bank. Start the BC licence and MSP paperwork.
- One week out. Confirm winter tires. Check DriveBC daily. Pack a two-day road bag separately.
- Move week. Load, drive to Kamloops, sleep, then run to Vancouver. Photograph high-value items first.
What goes wrong most often
Weather closures top the list, and a four-hour hold at Rogers Pass turns one driving day into two. Second is access: a building that will not release the elevator on your arrival date. Third is undeclared volume. You cannot control the mountains. You can control the measurements, the elevator booking and your inventory.

Which highway is better, Highway 1 or Highway 5?
Use both. Highway 1 takes you from Calgary to Kamloops. Highway 5, the Coquihalla, runs Kamloops to Hope and is faster than the older Fraser Canyon route. It is a toll-free four-lane freeway, but it carries the worst wind and snow on the trip.
Do I need a BC driver’s licence right away?
You have 90 days after establishing residency to exchange an Alberta licence for a BC one. Apply for BC Medical Services Plan coverage as soon as you arrive, because a waiting period applies. Bring proof of your Vancouver address to the ICBC office.
